Dear countrymen,
Before you read, I want everybody to understand that the topic is not adressing nationalistic, rascist or other points of view, under any circumstances whatsoever. Furthermore it is not aimed at sowing the seeds of discord between various nationalities of Kazakhstan.
This is topic is created due to my wish to emphasize the question of national identity. What do you think identifies the nation?...Personally thinking it includes components such as flag, anthem, emblem and so on. But, I belive I am not the only kazakh who holds the opinion that at this stage we are facing serious problem. The problem of national language...almost nobody denies that it is literally dying out.
It is not a secret that in a period of several decade the government devoted the least possible attention into this sphere. This period was sufficient enough to exert its destructive influence upon kazakh language - more and more phiolosphers and culturologists starting to point frequently towards the threat of ultimate loss of national cultural wealth, which plays a role not only in native but significantly in world-wide culture.
I am an international student. I study together with students from 80 distinct nationalities from all over the world. When somebody asks me why don't I speak my native language with my countrymate, what should I say??? Me or my countrymate are not speaking the native language sufficiently enough to communicate? Why? Obviously, because of the situation back home...
I suppose some kazakhs studying abroad facing this too....Your opinion is most welcome...Holla....

This page`s administration is not fair. I posted my critique here a month ago. It was in Kazakh written by latin words. My message appeared at day of posting and I saw it three days later. However, I don`t see it now. Who deleted it? It is unfair!

Hello ,
I am a kazakh girl and live in Germany.I am 18 years old and before 5 years i was never in Kazakhstan and i was shocked that the people there not speak in their native language.Even i am from Germany i can say that i speak better kazakh than someone from Kazakhstan. It s really strange that a Kazakh from Kazakhstan can t speak Kazakh. However ,i hope that the youth like me will see what it means to speak in their own language.

To Anchi:
You are describing the situation just the same I had in my school years.
No matter how you tried and resisted on such kind of tea drinks and pumplings , the teachers kept ther tradition last forever. They themselves spoke russion almost on each lessons of the subjects. Nobody tried to make us learn our native literate speach, nobody encouraged us to speak Kazakh with each other.
Now is the time I have a great desire to speak my native language and while speaking, its hard to recall the appropriate word and it burdens the process of communication.
The youth still feels embarrased to use kazakh language in everyday life. I do not, even, cannot understand them. Or they are ashamed of their nationality, coutry,parents- are they ashamed of their kazakh names as well???
HI 4 All!!!

I can understand what you all want to say.yes the problem comes from the soviet period .yes there is problems with our goverment and with some bad teachers and else .
but I want to tell one thing nothing will change till we won`t do it ourselves.
I`m sure it must be sad to speak russian among countrymates, this is like a bad habbit I think.yes there are someones who really don`t understand it but most of them I think understand but don`t speak because of the habbit.when we first met we made something like promise that we won`t use russian if we are with some other nationality friends because we didn`t want to be ashamed with a question why don`t you use native...?.after that we naturally used kazakh even there is no other nationality friends.just take a leadership .and start yourselves,I think the others also will follow you.after a time friends who can`t speak also can learn.because I had a situation when my friend used only russian but everytime I replied in kazakh so by the time situation changed.

Hi!
I think that our country I mean government , ministry of culture etc.are all responsible for that , that teenagers do not speak kazak language. I studied in russian and then in kazakh at the end I can not speak both languages...I mean on a high level. Its not enaugh to say hi and bye...I dontt understand magazines ...The problem is that in Kazakh schools there are no books, which could make people learn like the russian books. THe teachers in kazakh school are not competent like in russian schools,my experience showed me that kazaki teachers can only drink tee and make dastarhan during the classes. What the russian teachers do never do . Sorry but itss true... Kazaki teachers are lazy and dont want work like they suppoesd to do...Everybody knows that we are famous for our lazyness! O.k Thats enough .I hope guys you understood me even if I am kazak I feel sorry for going to kazak school and spending my 7 years doing nothing, but drinking tee and eating beshparmak...
Hi everybody:))
I think you guys really right.
and i agree with Delta, and all that happend to me 2, because my parents finish russian universities, schools, but they gave me a chance to study in kazakh school, and iam really glad, my school in Kz, is the music college, and my school completely in kazakh, i've been learn culture and everything. But you know guys what???
Sometimes i fell that my kazakh is not good, because all the time i talk in russian , my family, friends and with everybody,.....But i think it's our mistakes, it's because when we was Soviet Union wasn't enough kazakh school, and etc.And they tryed to close everything, but now then we are independent everything comeing again our language and schools, and sure universities........And the most important that know whatever you go you need to know kazakh language ,like then you walk in the street it's 2 languages, kazakh and russian, and i think it's will be the years, before our language will be completely popular and just people in Kazakhstan going to talk in kazakh...
And i know i'am young but i will try to do everyhing that i can.......
And all ya guys, just do the best what you can.....
Warm regards,
Toka
My parents gave me to kazakh school, but they had finished russian school and univercity. Of coure I am satisfied that I know kazakh language, but unfortunately the society surrounding me doesn't speak kazakh and sometimes I think I forget it. So the result of that is imperfect kazakh (because I don't almost use it) and russian (I didn't get the complete and qualitative language like in Russian schools). I guess that our society isn' ready or mature to speak kazakh with pleasure, many people just don't want. I agree with you that despite this fact we should try to speak and cultivate our children to love their language.

Last few years I met a lot of kazakh people of my age who doesn't speak kazakh, but they can understand and you know what I've noticed? Is when I say that I graduated from kazakh school and I speak really good kazakh they get really impressed, and it became kind of "cool" now to speak good kazakh. And I can see from their eyes that they really want to learn, because they are looking with some kind of gelousy ( I don't know hot to write "geliousy" or "gelousy") anyway, even for having a job in any foreign company working in Kazakhstan it is really preferable to have the knowledge of your mother language.
I would just say that things been changing and changing positively :)
I even know some families where neither father nor mother does not speak kazakh, but they gave their child to kazakh school, so he could learn and even speak better that his parents! isn't it great??? People understand their mistake and now trying to change somehow.
My mom told me this story that by the time I was supposed to go to kindergarden, they were trying to collect the sufficient number of kazakh kids and ask everyone to give their child to kazakh kindergarden, becuase otherwise it would be impossible to keep it open. So that's how I get to kazakh kindergarden, and then kazakh school and etc. And even at the university I chose kazakh group, because at that time kazakh language was much more easier for me to understand than russian....

Exactly...once I have encountered an article with a title like " The dying language" in a russian newspaper. It is incredible that even some of those who live in Russia are of the opinion that the language is gradually deteriorating or on the edge of extinction.
Hi,009. I am an international student and I totally agree with you because I have faced this kind of problem too. I speak kazakh maybe even better that russian, but the thing is that we are all used to speak russian between us, because mostly the young generation does not speak good enough to communicate.....unfortunately. That is the cause of the years, whem russian language was kind of fashion and every parents were trying to give their child to russian school and etc.....That was a big mistake, now most of the people of our age start to understand it and try to make things better, but it takes time and this thing that we've been having for ages and ages can not just be changed in short period of time. The most difficult thing is to explain foreigners how it is and why it is so. I don't know the solution, but I can definitely say that the best we can do is just at least try to speak among us sometimes and then maybe we get used to it.
